A Cotswolds Country Pub: The Peacock, Oxhill
Is there anything better than a lazy Sunday morning, followed by a big roast? In my eyes, definitely not! & on Sunday, Dave & I found the latter at The Peacock at Oxhill, a beautiful country pub in the Cotswolds*.
This 15th Century pub is tucked away in the delightful little village of Oxhill in Warwickshire & is run by new(ish) owner’s, Mark & Sarah.
As soon as we stepped through the door, we had a warm welcome & at the bar, chose from the wide selection of beers & wine, whilst simultaneously taking in the sights of the pub.
It’s interiors were rustic but in a modern, spruced-up kind of way & it completely worked. There were log fireplaces which would be perfect to snuggle up next to in the Winter & a big beer garden at the back for when the sun is shining. It’s the perfect all-rounder!
Once we had drinks in hand, we went through to the separate Dining Room. This room had a more modern feel to it; however, it still kept some of the original features such as the fireplace.
I especially loved the peacock feather wallpaper! This coupled with Henry – the pub’s friendly Labrador – snoozing in the corner, made for an enjoyable place to eat.
As we visited on a Sunday, we were given a special Roast menu to choose from & all of it sounded tummy-rumbling good. I think we could have easily eaten it all! In the end, Dave opted for the Roast Pork & I went for the Roast Chicken; both with all the trimmings.
The food arrived & looked so impressive! The dishes were a perfect mix of quanity & asthetic appeal, especially Dave’s with his crackling ‘bridge’! What was even better was that it all tasted as delicious as it looked.
Our meat melted in the mouth, the vegetables were cooked to perfection (not too soft, not too crunchy) & you could tell the gravy (with extra that came is a small jug) was fully homemade.
Dave & I agreed that it was one of the best roast dinners that we’d eaten out for a very long time!
After wolfing down our mains, Sarah brought over the desserts board & there were so many choices! One of the ‘couple’ things Dave & I do is order two seperate desserts or starters, split them in half & each try both. So with that in mind, we ordered the Warm Chocolate Fondant & Raspberry Cheesecake.
Just like the roasts, the presentation was wonderful, as were the portion sizes. The Chocolate Fondant was indulgent & comforting, whereas the Raspberry Cheesecake was refreshing & fruity. One thing’s for sure, both were incredible!
All in all, the meal was absolutely delicious. We even had chance to thank the amazing Chef, Antoine Casalonga, who came out to see us before we left. He & Mark also showed us the normal weekly & gluten free menus; there really is something for everyone!
With very full tummies, we retreated to the cosy bar area to finish our drinks before heading home.
It’s clear that Mark & Sarah know what they’re doing when it comes to running a pub. They’ve kept the original feeling of a typical country pub but have updated it to be on-trend & current. Plus, there was such a nice atmosphere & vibe about the place.
The locals clearly seem happy with the owners too!
Our visit to The Peacock, Oxhill for a scrumptious Sunday Roast certainly didn’t disappoint! Dave & I have both agreed we will 100% be going back in the near future!
Thank you so much to Mark, Sarah & all the brilliant staff for making our dining experience so great; we look forward to seeing you again soon!
*In exchange for an honest review, Dave & I were given a complimentary 2-course meal for two. All views are our own.
