Dave & I were meant to be spending a week at Newport in Pembrokeshire, Wales this year. However, due to an exciting development in our lives, we decided postpone the trip until next year. But to make things worse – as I was already sad to not be visiting a place that is incredibly close to my heart – my birthday was during that week. So, Dave offered – after I dropped some rather heavy hints! – to plan something for my birthday anyway.
On the morning of my birthday, I awoke to Dave’s alarm going off at 4:30am, bleary eyed & confused. He instructed me to pack a case & that we’d be leaving within the hour.
With the car all packed up & a full thermos of coffee to hand, we set off on the unknown journey but I soon guessed where we were heading: Newport! I couldn’t have been happier & more touched if I tried. My man had done so good.
My Gran owns a caravan at the Llwyngwair Manor Holiday Park & was somewhere she & my Grampy took my brother & I every Summer. It also happens to be the location of my first holiday with Dave. Hence why it is such a special place to me. The park also has everything you could need: warm showers, the beautiful River Nevern running alongside it, clean toilet blocks, a bar/restaurant & fun games room. Plus, Newport is only 2 mins down the road! It really is my favourite place in the U.K. & I was overwhelmed with emotion that Dave has planned such an amazing surprise.
We arrived to the site shortly before 8:30am after an easy journey across. It never fails to amaze me how I can get that buzzy feeling of excitement mixed with nostalgia whilst driving through the park! Once at the caravan, we unloaded the car quickly before sitting down with a cuppa & opening up my wonderful cards & presents.
Then we headed back out to make most of the sunshine & headed to the beach.
Newport Sands is one of the best beaches: it looks beautiful with cliffs either side, it has soft sand, a little shop that sells ice creams, sand dunes to shelter you from the wind, a small estuary with warmer water to paddle in & rock pools teaming with marine wildlife…I mean, what more could you want?
We spent a lovely couple of relaxing hours paddling (though the water was freezing!) & enjoying the fresh sea air.
The rockpools at the top of the beach are ace & we found ourselves acting like kids again by peering in to each pool to try & spot crabs, fish & other sea creatures living in the waters.
Once beached out, we drove over to Cardigan for a wander. We stopped at The Grosvenor for a drink & some chips & then proceeded to dip in to a couple of the book shops. As a birthday treat, I picked up 3 books that I’d been wanting to read for ages; all for £1.25 – bargain!!
After picking up food & drink from Tesco, we went back to the caravan for a chilled out afternoon of reading by the river, playing pool at the bar & watching TV series & films whilst cuddled up on the sofa.
It was the perfect way to spend my birthday.
We awoke to heavy rain on the Friday, which didn’t stop all day! Because of this, we decided to spend the day at the site, keeping warm & dry.
Dave started off our day by cooking an amazing full English breakfast. It was delicious!
The rain seriously didn’t stop all night & day & so much so, the river rose drastically (as you can see below!). But nothing beats the sound of heavy rain hitting a caravan roof, whilst you’re all warm & cosy inside it.
We did brave the rain and ventured out to Newport for lunch. We chose to dine at The Castle Inn and devoured some really tasty burgers.
The day was wonderfully relaxing & exactly what we both needed.
On the Saturday, we woke up with the intention of leaving for home. However, the sun was shining & we weren’t quite ready to leave our happy little bubble. So, after some deliberation, we opted to stay for an extra night & got in the car for a morning adventure.
The adventure took us to Poppit Sands, not far from Cardigan.
With our shoes off, we strolled hand in hand along the soft & silky white sand, taking in the surrounding sights.
Although the beach was busy, the sun was intermittently showing itself & the beach walk was lovely.
By the time we’d got back to the car, we were feeling peckish. & there’s only one thing to do when you feel that way…have a coffee & some cake! Dave went for a chocolate brownie & I went for a chocolate & banana muffin; both equally scrumptious!
As we were leaving Poppit Sands, the clouds opened up & it started pouring with rain again. Therefore, we dashed over to Tesco before heading back to the caravan for another relaxing afternoon of games, food, drinks & films.
Luckily the rain did subside enough for us to also have a short walk by the river, which was a great way to end the day and our time in Pembrokeshire.
Dave gave me the best gift for my birthday by surprising me with this time away. I loved every minute of spending time with my favourite person in my favourite place & can’t wait to come again!
