New Year’s Break in the Lake District, Cumbria
Another New Year? Another weekend away! This time in the stunning Lake District, Cumbria.
Dave and Carl had surprised Jodie and me by taking us to Cornwall on the first of these New Year trips in 2016. Jodie and I then repaid the favour with a surprise weekend in Pembrokeshire, Wales in 2017. This year, however, we decided to join forces and book 2018’s long weekend away together.
After some research we settled on the Lake District as our location. Then, not long after, found our lodge on Lake District Lodge Holiday’s website. Windermere View, in White Cross Bay, was perfect for our trip. It was a great size! With two double bedrooms, one with an en-suite, a lovely bathroom and a cosy kitchen, dining room and lounge area. It also featured a hot tub and slight view of Lake Windermere itself!
White Cross Bay was also a fabulous park. It had even improved since staying there with family a few years ago! The large park sits next to the lake and has a small store, pool and a bar and restaurant. All in all, the weekend’s accommodation was top notch!
Now comes the sad part of this post…
Unfortunately, Jodie became unwell in the days leading up to trip. Therefore, after a few of days of debating, Jodie and Carl decided that they were not going to join us. It was a massive shame and we missed our New Year buddies terribly. But, although our trip wasn’t the same without them, at least Jodie was in the best place to recover and she is now fighting fit again…yay!
Despite being two people short, Dave and I tried to make the most of our time there. And we did have a brilliant – albeit bittersweet! – break, with lots of places visited, sights seen and fun had.
I’ll be uploading a series of posts over the week to cover our trip, all of which will be linked below once published, if you want to read more!
Day 1 – Travelling & Settling In.
Following discussions on Thursday evening, we opted to have a lie in on Friday, so that Jodie could see if she felt up to travelling. When the morning came around, our poor friend was feeling no better. As we needed to be at the lodge in time for a pre-booked Tesco delivery, we all decided that Dave and I would drive up separately and the other two would try to join us later in the day or on Saturday.
After a decent journey and lunch stop at services, Dave and I arrived to the lodge shortly before check-in. And what better way to fill the waiting time? A walk by the lake, followed by celebratory ‘start of holiday’ drink at the bar! Beer for him, g&t for her. Lovely.
At 3pm, we drove around to our accommodation at the same time that the food delivery arrived. After a mad rush to get in to the lodge/meet the Tesco van/unload and check the shopping/pack it away/unpack the car/finally admire the lodge, we could eventually relax. This meant only one thing: hot tub!
We spent the rest of the evening relaxing. We chilled in the bubbling jacuzzi, enjoyed drinks and made dinner, played Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit – thanks to my brother and sister-in-law! – and watched films, before turning in for the night.
Day 2 – Lake Windermere Trek.
Day 3 – Relaxing at White Cross Bay.
Day 4 – NYE Hike at Buttermere.
Day 5 – NYD Adventure to Aira Force & Ullswater.
Day 6 – Home Time.
Wednesday morning was the end to our fabulous New Year’s Lake District adventure and we were certainly disappointed to be leaving!
Although we were very sad that our dear friends couldn’t make the trip, Dave and I had a wonderful break. I’m already wishing we were back there!
But with exciting plans in the making, I’m now looking forward to going on more adventures with three of my favourite people – providing there’s no sickness or bugs in the group! – throughout 2019…
