I’m very lucky to have my birthday fall slap bang in the middle of the year and in summer. This also makes it easier for my boyfriend to plan what to do for the day – as opposed to me trying to plan his, which falls on 25th December! And this year, Dave did very well with a Herefordshire adventure!
After being woken up with a coffee, a full English breakfast – sausages, bacon, eggs, hash browns…the works! – and lovely cards and presents, we hopped in the car and headed to the first of the day’s destinations.
We arrived to Symonds Yat mid-morning and proceeded to hire a canoe from the Wyedean Adventure Centre. Both of us hadn’t been canoeing for years, but after the initial rocky moment of getting one’s body actually in to the boat safely, it all came flooding back. We took to it like ducks take to water!
I say ‘we’…Dave did most of the rowing and hard work. Me? I sat and took in all the views, snapping away with the camera and trying to spot the wildlife; some would say that’s just as important job as the rowing…maybe!
The water was calm and the perfect temperature to dip our hands in to cool off under the beating sunshine. We saw plenty of other people too, but none were in our way and hopefully we weren’t in theirs either!
After a couple of hours, we glided the canoe back to it’s docking area and headed for a birthday drink at The Saracen’s Head.
Once those had disappeared, back in the car we went and we headed over to the historic town of Ledbury for a wander. As well as seeing the old buildings, we also dipped in to lovely The Severn Stars pub.
Then came the next surprise of the day, Dave had booked us in to stay at the Penyard House Hotel near Ross-on-Wye! Although a little dated, the staff were friendly, the bed was comfy and they had even left a lovely birthday message for our arrival!
Once we’d changed, we caught a taxi in to the centre of Ross-on-Wye and had an absolutely brilliant evening! It all started with a drink at the comfy Eagle Inn, followed by a delicious dinner at the Avellino Restaurant. Dave went for a Carbonara and I opted for a Spaghetti Avellino, both were divine!
After dinner, we headed to Leonards at 39 for a birthday cocktail or two. Dave also had a slice of carrot cake – my fave! – delivered to our table. It was an incredibly sweet thought, the cake tasted scrummy too!
This quickly turned in to several cocktails, followed by another couple of drinks at the hotel bar – because, obviously, we hadn’t had enough by then! As soon as last orders were called, we dragged ourselves to bed and fell straight to sleep.
Dave did amazingly well with organising all my birthday surprises, especially as I’m the control freak in our relationship! It was also wonderful to spend the evening out, something we rarely do as just the two of us. Though the hangovers the next morning weren’t quite so fun!
