The World Mountain Bike Chariot Racing Championships
My Mum’s partner, Nick, and his friends are a little bit mad (in a good way, of course!). You see, they like to take on fitness challenges. But not any old one… No, they have to find the obscure and the weird; like mud runs, World Bog Snorkelling Championships and most recently, the World Mountain Bike Chariot Racing Championships.
Don’t worry, that’s not a typo. There is such a thing as Mountain Bike Chariot Racing! It’s even so popular that there are World Championships for it. I know, I couldn’t quite believe it either.
That is why we – my Mum, Auntie and I – found ourselves travelling to Wales on a cold Saturday morning at the start of January.
Having arrived early for the guys to get checked in, us
ladies cheerleaders nipped to the nearby town in search of caffeine. Llanwrtyd Wells, the smallest town in Wales, didn’t have a lot to offer up in the way of…well, anything. But, it did provide us with lovely cake and coffee at the only open cafe, Caffi Sosban.
Sufficiently fuelled, we made our way back to the event location in time for the chariot racing to start. Unlike previous years (we’d been told), the turnout wasn’t that great. This left us wondering what an earth the ‘Desperate Dans’ had signed up for.
But, in fact, the World Mountain Bike Chariot Racing Championships were fantastic! The whole thing was such a laugh; from mud splattering on the contestants, to the fact that Romans were wandering around like it was normal, to there being only six teams competing, all of whom gave it their absolute all. We could certainly see why it would have had bigger numbers in previous years!
Our group did brilliantly as well, coming third overall – well done them! It was another medal to go on the growing pile of crazy accomplishments they’d achieved. We – the tag-alongs – also agreed that, if it weren’t for these mad men, we wouldn’t be going on these random adventures. We would never have travelled to Wales for the day just to watch some mountain bike chariot racing. Life is an adventure and it feels like we’re living it to the full. We’ll definitely all be able to look back at these outings with fond memories and plenty of laughs!
I wonder what they’ll take on next, I’ll keep you posted…
